The Poret® Cube Filter: Simplicity that works!

The cube filter is simple: cubes of Poret® foam are glued with silicone onto an unglazed porcelain tile used as a base. In principle, you could use any stone or slate plate as a base but silicone sticks much better to a porcelain tile since it has the same properties as glass. Using slate plates proved disappointing because the silicone really does not stick to the slate long-term. I have used these now for over 5 years and raised thousands of fry of all kinds of fish using this filter. Even better with the efficient B&H Cubelifter™, they work great with the cube filters.

Here are the filter volumes for the different cubes:

Model Foam volume Inflow area (outer surface) Recommended for
4" cube filter 1 Liter (58 cubic in) 75 sq in tanks 5-15 gal
5" cube filter 1.95 L (112 cubic in) 120 sq in tanks 15-30 gal
6" cube filter 3.37 L (195 cubic in) 180 sq in tanks 30-50 gal
10" tall cube filter 5.62 L (396 cubic in) 270 sq in tanks 50-75 gal

Compare that to:
ATI Hydro 1  0.33 L (19 cubic in)
ATI Hydro 2  0.32 L (18.5 cubic in)
ATI Hydro 3  0.65 L (38 cubic in)
ATI Hydro 4  1.08 L (63 cubic in)
ATI Hydro 5  1.61 L (93 cubic in)

It would take an ATI Hydro 4 to equal the 4" cube filter, while the 5" cube beats every Hydro-Sponge filter by volume and in performance. The large B&H Cubelifter™ can move up to 80-100 gal/h depending on air pump performance.

Powered by the B&H Cubelifter™, they outperform any more complex filters.

New: Make your own cube filter:

Cube materials are 39x4x4" strips that cut easily into ten 4" cubes. It takes the pain out of cutting large 4" sheets. The strips ship folded or cut in half. A very economical way to make your own cube filters or to replace worn out foam.
